About Us

Who are we?

The Victoria Finance and Investment Club was founded in 2019 with the goal of promoting financial education and finance and commerce careers to university students. The club runs a diverse range of initiatives. These range from workshops to competitions to speaker events. These initiatives provide a platform for students to engage, learn, and connect. The workshops we host delve into the intricacies of financial concepts, offering hands-on experiences that go beyond the classroom. We also host speakers from the industry who share their invaluable expertise and career tips. Additionally, the club hosts intro events to help people build their network and get an understanding of different job opportunities. Furthermore, the competitions the club offers and participates in give students a chance to test their skills in a real-life situation.

The club also has a strategic partnership with the Victoria Student Fund Charitable Trust (VSFCT) which allows students to be involved in a student-run investment fund. This gives students a chance to get hands-on experience in managing a portfolio and pitching investment ideas. The club also has set up a daily financial newsletter called the Daily Deck. People in Australia, New Zealand and the US read this.

Overall the club tries to create a community of like-minded individuals passionate about finance. We foster an environment where ideas flourish, collaborations thrive, and lasting connections are forged. Whether you're a seasoned finance enthusiast or just embarking on your journey, the Victoria Finance and Investment Club welcomes you to join a community where learning is a lifelong pursuit.

What type of events do we host?

The club hosts lots of different events. The events can be broken down into the categories seen below.

  • Career events - This is where the club has firms come in and speak about roles they have available and what they do. It also provides members a chance to network with industry professionals. Past firms have included UBS, Citi, Jarden, Forsyth Barr, Grant Thornton, Cameron Partners & many more.

  • Investing talks - We have speakers come in and give an introduction to investing talk. We typically host two of these a year, with an Investing 101 in semester one and Investing 102 in semester two.

  • Panels - These are usually on set topics and give members a chance to learn more about the industry. For example, some of our past panels have been based on what the finance and legal industry is like, women in Business, careers in commerce & the state of the financial markets and more.

  • Workshops - We will either have speakers come in and run workshops, or executive members will run workshops. These usually focus on key skills and have a practical element to them. For example, past workshops have been valuation workshops, Introduction to Excel & many more.

  • Competitions- We run or participate in competitions each year. These include stock pitch competitions, the CFA research challenge, venture capital competitions and more.

What does the club get out of the partnership with VSFCT?

The partnership with the Victoria Student Fund Charitable Trust provides many benefits to students. Firstly, it allows students to participate in a student-run investment fund. This gives students the chance to manage a real portfolio and pitch investment ideas. Secondly, it helps the club run educational workshops and talks. Thirdly, it gives students the chance to volunteer for VSFCT and present their financial literacy workshops to schools and community groups across the country.
